Opening Statement & Curatorial Text

Art Platform A-ZIMUTH is closer to a direction than to a place.
It is not grounded in the idea of settlement, but exists as a provisional coordinate where different trajectories briefly intersect.
For many artists working in London, this city is a waypoint rather than a destination. In the process of learning, experimenting, forming relationships, and moving on again,
their practices are often regarded as temporary. Yet this temporality does not signify disappearance or incompletion.
Rather, it is a process—a duration of accumulation that shapes the next direction.

A-ZIMUTH focuses on the traces left by this passing time. What matters here is not where one has settled, but what kind of trajectory one has drawn while passing through.
This space is less a site for preserving outcomes than an operative structure through which moments of movement, relation, and experimentation can be recalled and extended within the present.

The inaugural exhibition, Liminal Coordinates, brings forth the sensibilities generated within such a condition.
The participating artists do not treat categories long assumed to be distinct—life and death, inside and outside, relation and solitude—as fixed boundaries.
Instead, they attend to points where differing conditions and temporalities come into contact: moments that linger before definition.
In this exhibition, a “boundary” is not a line to be crossed but a state in which different directions temporarily coexist,
and a “coordinate” is not a fixed position but a provisional reference that enables further movement.
The works reveal modes of being formed within this suspended and oscillating time.

The beginning of A-ZIMUTH is not a declaration, but an effort to create conditions in which such trajectories can recognize and continue one another.
The coordinates generated here do not remain fixed; they will be renewed again in relation to other places and encounters.

This first chapter thus opens not as a location, but as a direction.

Press /  Reviews

... “Upon entering the exhibition space, the first impression is the density of the environment. Some visitors commented that the concentration of works felt somewhat intense, yet this very density became one of the exhibition’s most compelling qualities. The interior remained dark without being completely engulfed in darkness, and the works—installed while negotiating the raw, site-specific qualities of the space—maintained a refined sense of order. From the entrance to the staircase leading to the second floor, artworks were placed closely together, allowing viewers to naturally slow down as they moved through the space. This slowing down created moments of concentration. At the same time, the condensed density of the exhibition revealed a ‘rhizomatic’ condition in which different voices gathered within a single site. It may be premature to reach a definitive conclusion, yet the exhibition’s atmosphere, in line with its central premise, maintained a state in which beginnings and endings, centre and periphery, and interior and exterior could not be clearly distinguished. Rather than compelling the viewer toward a fixed message, the exhibition seemed more concerned with the possibility that disparate elements might come together in combination to form a whole.” ...(From review  by  Boyoung Oh, Goldsmiths  Curating  MFA)
